These innovative bottles will be used to package medications aimed at treating and preventing various types of rhinitis.
Compared to traditional PET bottles, they offer a 21.9% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions.
The production process for these Carbon Capture PET bottles involves capturing carbon emissions and converting them into BioMEG, a key component of PET, through fermentation.
Despite the reduction in carbon emissions, these bottles maintain the same safety and performance standards as conventional PET, with comparable levels of extractables.
Moreover, the bottles are fully recyclable and retain the mechanical and physical properties of standard PET.
This collaboration marks the first time a Carbon Capture PET bottle will be used in the pharmaceutical sector, further demonstrating the industry’s growing commitment to sustainability.
“The agreement with Chiesi to supply their products with Carbon Capture PET bottles highlights both the performance and safety of these containers, and the broader move towards sustainability in the pharma industry,” said Andrea Lodetti, CEO of Bormioli Pharma.
He also noted that nearly half of Bormioli Pharma’s sales now come from products made with low-impact materials, reflecting the company’s dedication to sustainable packaging through its EcoPositive line.
The EcoPositive range, which includes over 3,000 items in glass and plastic, has seen a significant 304% increase in low-impact plastic containers since 2021.
The company’s “50-in-5” corporate strategy aims to have 50% of its products made from sustainable materials by 2025, with the share already at 47% in the first half of 2024.
This growth is bolstered by partnerships with sustainability leaders like LanzaTech Global and Plastipak.
In January, Bormioli Pharma teamed up with clean technology company Loop Industries to develop a 100% recycled PET pharmaceutical bottle.
The innovative bottle is crafted entirely from 100% recycled virgin-quality Loop™ PET resin, representing a notable advancement in the pharmaceutical industry’s adoption of environmentally responsible alternatives.
The partnership between Loop and Bormioli aims to provide responsible packaging solutions to the global pharmaceutical sector.
The bottle has been confirmed to release no substances of toxicological concern.
This development aligns with Bormioli’s EcoPositive initiative, which comprises half of its standard catalogue and emphasizes its commitment to sustainable offerings in the market.
