Hotel Chocolat to recycle plastic packaging from consumers

British chocolatier and cocoa grower Hotel Chocolat has announced it is running a scheme for consumers to recycle any plastic packaging in all its stores across the UK, according to The Grocer.

The move accepts clean plastic packaging from any product or retailer, as well as Hotel Chocolat’s own.

Hotel Chocolat CEO and co-founder Angus Thirlwell told The Grocer that shoppers are becoming increasingly interested in the scheme.

The move is a part of Hotel Chocolat’s sustainability aims, which includes its pledge to make all of its packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2021. The chocolatier has already started to use packaging produced from sugar cane, which is sustainable, compostable and biodegradable, for its A Dozen Quail Eggs box.

Thirwell said that the move to using the plant fibre bagasse packaging was to “show its intent and determination to have plant-powered and environmental packaging,” adding that shoppers have taken to the change with sales proving to be strong, helping the company to be confident in its endeavours.

Hotel Chocolat said that it is now doubling its efforts to further push its sustainability programme.
